How do the English multiple-choice tests work?

When enrolled in our English language program, you will have to complete two tests: one oral, the Level Test, and one multiple-choice, the English Grammar & Vocabulary or Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading & Writing Test.

The oral Level Test taken in a classroom on EnglishCentral is always combined with one of the following multiple-choice tests:

  1. The English Grammar & Vocabulary Test
  2. The English Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading & Writing Test

The abovementioned tests are to nuance and serve as an extra check to balance the assessment of the Level Test.

You can check your English level with the number of multiple-choice questions you answered correctly/well in the English Grammar & Vocabulary or Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading & Writing Test. Underneath, you can see how well you should do in each test to get a certain CEFR level.

The scoring system of the multiple-choice tests

Since there is a diffrent number of questions in each test, mapping scores are different for the two tests.

Why do I have to do two English tests?

At Spot On Learning, we work with two English tests to estimate your overall English level: [1] the oral Level Test taken online by a teacher and [2] a multiple-choice English Grammar & Vocabulary Test that can for some participants also include Reading & Writing assignments. The combination of the two makes our testing methodology both comprehensive and practical.

What do CEFR levels of English language proficiency (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2) mean? How are EC (EnglishCentral) levels 1 - 7 related to CEFR levels?

After you have taken your Level (up) Test, you will receive your test result. In most cases the result will be expressed as a CEFR level (A1, A1/A2, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2). CEFR is an international standard to measure a person's second language proficiency. The level required by your employer will also be a CEFR level. Continue reading to find more detailed information about the CEFR level and the relationship with other language levels.

How is my English Grammar & Vocabulary Test score related to my CEFR level?

After you have done your English Grammar & Vocabulary Test, you will receive your score (numbered between 1 and 60). Your result can also serve as an indication of your CEFR level.
