Operationalize team values
Values can be thought of in terms of where a business wants to go, what is most important, or what the organization stands for. These are organizational values. In a team, you can also create values for how you want to collaborate effectively together.
The exercise
- See the list of values below.
- Let everyone pick 5 values that they find essential for effectively collaborating without telling others about them. Write each of the values chosen on a Post-it.
- Write one sentence explaining what this value means regarding collaborating with others. What can you see people do, how do people act, and what do they say when having this value?
- Divide the team into 2/3 groups of a maximum of 5 people and discuss all values on the Post-it notes. Notice any commonalities that arise in the conversation.
- Write down which values, sentences, and beliefs were discussed and try to choose 5 values that everyone seems to agree with.
- Give those values 3 sentences to elaborate further on how this group views that value in action.
- Do it with the other group(s) again, but this time, you can have 6 sentences to explain a value.
Outcome
The result should be five well-discussed, team-driven, operational, six-sentence values for your team. Have fun!
