Flexible time management

In practice: Day-to-day switchtasking
Would you like to learn more about how to work with flexible time management cultures? In this article you will find additional advice and directions, including some do's and don'ts.

Who needs what

In cultures with flexible time management preferences (including Latin-America , Africa and Asia) agendas are indicative but not leading. Whatever is deemed more important will get more attention. This could relate to either personal and family matters or network obligations, or higher levels that require support.

Be urgent

People have many different tasks on their plate, and spent time according to which one is most urgent to them today. The level of urgency is determined by situation and the people involved. The status of the relationship matters; higher management or relatives require or deserve more attention than a random colleague or client.

Do's:

  • make sure the most senior level is included
  • offer networking opportunities
  • check-in very regularly to ask for updates
  • invest in a personal relationship

Don'ts:

  • push people to meet deadlines
  • send reminders
