Hierarchical cultures

Would you like to learn more about working with hierarchical cultures? In this article you will find additional advice and directions, including some do's and don'ts.

Act according to your position

In hierarchical cultures people generally accept that there is a power distance between different positions, and that the person in charge is leading the group forward. Overall, these cultures feel that there is more (social) stability when everyone understands their position and place in society, and in the organisation. Leaders have most leverage towards other parties, and are expected to protect the group interest.

Confirm positions

People have a need to be acknowledged and respected in their position. Formal expressions of their positions such as business cards, offices and cars are an important way to do so. People are looking to meet with equivalent or higher ranking persons.

In interacting with hierarchical cultures it is recommended to:

Do's:

  • give compliments to the host
  • communicate at your own level
  • greet the highest ranking person first
  • keep an eye on seating arrangements according to hierarchy
  • distinguish in gifts according to the hierarchical level

Dont's:

  • do not interrupt or interfere at a higher level
  • give every person in the room equal attention
  • go sit anywhere
  • take the lead in the discussion
