Egalitarian cultures

Power to the people
Would you like to learn more about working with egalitarian cultures? In this article you will find additional advice and directions, including some do's and don'ts.

Everyone is equal

Egalitarian cultures are most comfortable when every person is regarded and treated as equals. It is expected that every person in a meeting or the workplace speaks up and takes ininitiatives to improve the outcome. Egalitarian cultures thrive on the free exchange information to spur debate and find solutions together.

Achievement

In practice egalitarian cultures do not distinguish between different ranks, but they may provide extra attention to professionals or individuals who stand out because of their accomplishments. Status is based on merit and knowledge, rather than position.

Include all

To compensate for any hierarchical differences they may also give extra credits to people who are in lower ranking positions. They want to make sure no one feels left out or undervalued.

In interacting with egalitarian cultures it is recommended to:

Do's:

  • share information and ideas freely / show your capabilities
  • speak your mind or ask questions to show engagement
  • keep an informal attitude
  • greet everyone in the room separately
  • include anyone with an interest

Don'ts:

  • hold back or stay silent
  • look the other way when you see an issue
  • command someone or act like a boss
  • forget to include people
  • focus on the highest ranking person only
