What are experience points (XPs) on englishcentral.com?

Each time you watch, learn, speak or complete a quiz, you earn experience points

Experience points (XPs) are points you get by working on videos on englishcentral.com. You gather them by watching videos, learning words, speaking lines and completing quizzes. They reflect how much effort you have put into EnglishCentral courses.

Why are experience points (XPs) relevant?

Both research and experience show that people who use different learning modes on EnglishCentral and put in enough effort (gather enough experience points), always make progress and improve their English language proficiency.

If you go through your courses too fast, you will collect less XPs. But, if you:

  • select more words in the "Learn" mode,
  • choose more lines in the "Speak" mode and
  • quiz yourzelf frequently...

... you will earn more XPs. It can take you more time to complete a course but you will remember more and make more progress towards a higher proficiency level.

How do you earn experience points?

  • You earn 10 XPs per 1 watched video
  • You earn 10 XPs per 1 learned word
  • You earn 10 XPs per 1 spoken line
  • You earn 10 XPs per 1 quizzed word
  • You earn 50 XPs per 1 GoLive! lesson

Where can I find my XPs?

To see your XPs in a browser version of englishcentral.com, click on the EnglishCentral logo.

You will then be taken to the page where you can see your XPs.

To see how many XPs you have in total, click "Overall Progress."

To see your XPs in the EnglishCentral app, click on the EnglishCentral logo.

To see how many XPs you have, click "Weekly Progress" or "Overall Progress."

How much should I do to improve?

  • Learn and speak at least 10 words and 10 lines per video
  • Some videos are a bit shorter than others. In that case 6 words and 6 lines is enough
  • When doing a Maritime course, we suggest you select all words and lines to make sure you build your maritime vocabulary. This is what we call "slow learning." Based on our research and experience, people learn better and remember more in the long run if they learn in the "slow" mode

Guide: How to work on englishcentral.com

In this guide we explain how you as a participant can effectively work on EnglishCentral.

I am told I learn too fast. What is wrong with fast learning?

When it comes to learning and gaining new knowledge, faster is not always better. If you need to learn something that is important (or even life-saving), it would be good to keep in mind that an average person retains only 10% of what they learn in a year. Below, we have some tips for you to learn effectively and remember more than just 10%. And yes, when you apply them, your course takes some time to finish. However, what you end up with in this case is going to be worth it.

How long does it take to reach a higher CEFR level?

How fast you can reach a higher CEFR level depends on many factors, e.g., how often you study, how much you do, if you do additional exercises, etc. Your required level (RL) may actually be further than 1 level away from your current CEFR level. If so, it can take you longer to reach your RL.
