Another difference between cultures is between group-oriented (or 'collectivist') and individualist cultures. This dimension is also influenced by how people from different cultures go about meeting new people and finding out if they can be trusted.

Individual vs. group

Collectivist cultures are often more relationship-oriented. Individualist cultures are more task-oriented. If you come from a group-oriented culture, it is important to understand which groups someone is a 'member' of.

  • Is he/she from a 'good family'?
  • Has he/she worked for a company with a good reputation?
  • Is he/she well-networked?

In an individualist culture you focus on... the individual. In such a culture personal achievement defines who you are. Henk is proud to be a seafarer. He is also proud that his education and hard work helped him to become an officer at an early age.
